The Road to Potosí

This past weekend, Ryan and I spent a few days in Potosí, the former heart of the Spanish empire. Here are a few pics from the stunning drive from Sucre into the altiplano.
The road is paved the entire way, which is appropriate given that Potosí and its silver-rich Cerro Rico caused rumors that the roads in the New World were paved in gold. (We were told that Potosí still holds a festival in which they cover the streets in silver. Apparently, this only happens every 50 years and isn't due for another 40 or so.)

It was a nice bus ride that was short by Bolivian standards--a mere three and a half hours. We splurged for a semi-cama bus that cost us about $2.25 each.

More on Potosí later ...
